PEF (Pentax Electronic Format) is the RAW container written by every Pentax K-mount DSLR since the *ist D in 2003, including the K-1 II, KP, K-3 III, K-70, and the discontinued 645Z medium-format body. Landscape photographers who favor Pentax for the in-body weather sealing and Astrotracer GPS feature, plus a long tail of K-1000 film shooters who moved to digital K-bodies, generate PEF when not using the DNG option Pentax also provides. Convert to JPG for prints from Bay Photo, Mpix, or Whitewall, all of which accept JPG up to 200MB.

Pentax cameras uniquely let you toggle between PEF and DNG per shot via the RAW button, so many K-1 II shooters carry mixed cards. PEF compresses better (typically 20-30% smaller than the DNG equivalent) but only Pentax Digital Camera Utility (PDCU) and recent Adobe versions parse the Pentax Pixel Shift Resolution metadata. Astro shooters running the K-1 with Astrotracer geo-tagged shots through Pentax's GPS module need PDCU or Lightroom 7+ to preserve the embedded plate-solving data when exporting JPG.

Pixel Shift Resolution (PSR) on the K-1 II, K-3 III, and KP captures four sub-pixel-shifted frames and merges them in-camera, recording the merged result inside the PEF. Landscape photographers shooting the Smoky Mountains or Iceland with the 15-30mm f/2.8 convert PSR-enabled PEF files to JPG at full 36MP for fine-art prints. Without PSR enabled the K-1 still hits 36MP - enough for a 24x36-inch print at 300dpi without upscaling.

PEF (Pentax Electronic Format) launched with the *ist D in 2003, Pentax's first digital SLR, and has shipped on every subsequent body alongside an optional DNG mode that Pentax pioneered among major DSLR makers. The format remained under Hoya, then Ricoh after the 2011 acquisition, and continues today inside the Ricoh-owned Pentax brand. Current bodies — the K-1 Mark II full-frame, K-3 Mark III Monochrome, and KF — all write PEF. Pentax's commitment to optical viewfinder DSLRs gives PEF an unusual market niche in an otherwise mirrorless world.

RAW files are the unprocessed sensor output from a digital camera - They contain more data, more dynamic range, and more editing flexibility than JPG, but they cannot be viewed or shared without specialist software. Converting RAW to JPG is the essential last step in any photography workflow that ends in sharing, printing, or publishing.

Photographers shooting in RAW do so to preserve maximum editing latitude: highlight recovery, shadow lifting, white balance adjustment, and noise reduction all benefit from having the full raw sensor data. Once editing is complete in Lightroom, Capture One, or a similar RAW editor, the JPG export is the deliverable - The file that goes to the client, the photo agency, the wedding album, or the magazine.

When RAW editing software is not available - Such as on a shared computer, a friend's machine, or when editing time is limited - A direct RAW-to-JPG conversion applies automatic white balance and tone mapping to produce a clean, viewable JPG without requiring any manual adjustments. This is ideal for quick previews, proof sheets, and sharing photos straight from the camera.

  • Toggle PEF vs DNG via the RAW button on K-1 II / K-3 III bodies - PEF saves card space, DNG saves headaches in legacy software.
  • For Pixel Shift Resolution files, use Pentax Digital Camera Utility 5 to merge - Adobe handles the base frame but Pentax's algorithm includes motion correction Adobe lacks.
  • K-1 II Astrotracer shots embed GPS and celestial coordinates - keep this metadata when exporting JPG if submitting to astrophotography sites like AstroBin.
  • Match Pentax Custom Image (Bright, Natural, Reversal Film) by downloading the free DCP profiles from Ricoh's support site and loading them in Lightroom.
  • Strip serial number and lens info from EXIF before forum uploads - Pentax bodies embed both, which lets bad actors fingerprint your gear in public posts.

JPG (JPEG) is the world's most compatible image format - Supported on every device, browser, printer, and application. Lossy compression keeps file sizes small.

  • Use the Daylight white balance preset for outdoor shots taken in natural light — Auto works for most mixed-light situations.
  • Set quality to 90–95 when converting RAW to JPG for archival or editing purposes; use 75–85 for web sharing.
  • RAW conversion cannot recover focus or exposure errors — adjust in Lightroom or similar software before converting if the shot needs work.
  • JPG from RAW is a one-way process; keep the original RAW file if you may want to re-edit the image later.

PEF is Pentax's proprietary RAW format used by every K-mount and 645 digital body Pentax has released. It is a TIFF-based container storing 12-bit or 14-bit linear sensor data, Pentax-specific maker notes, and embedded Pixel Shift Resolution merge data when that feature is enabled. Most Pentax cameras also offer DNG as an alternative selectable per shot. Read more: RAW File Format Explained: Sensor Data and JPG Conversion

K-1 / K-1 II at 36MP produces 40-50MB PEF files, dropping to 35-42MB versus the equivalent DNG. K-3 III at 26MP averages 30-36MB. Pixel Shift Resolution PEFs are roughly 2x size because they contain merged data. After conversion to JPG quality 90 expect 8-14MB for the 36MP K-1 and 5-9MB for the K-3 III at 26MP.

Lightroom Classic 7+ reads PEF and all current K-mount profiles. Pentax Digital Camera Utility 5 is the only software that fully processes Pixel Shift Resolution merge data with the motion-correction algorithm Pentax developed. For non-PSR shots Lightroom is faster and more flexible; for PSR landscape work PDCU produces sharper merged output.

PEF files are 20-30% smaller than the equivalent DNG because Pentax uses a tighter compression scheme. They also store the in-camera Custom Image style (Bright, Natural, Landscape) as parseable metadata. DNG is the better choice if you archive long-term or use software that only updates support for major-vendor formats.

Install Pentax Digital Camera Utility 5 free from ricoh-imaging.com - it works on Windows 10/11 and macOS 11+. The File menu Batch Develop tool exports JPG from PEF with sRGB or AdobeRGB color, custom quality, and resize options, and it handles current-firmware PEF files faster than Adobe sometimes ships support for.
