How to Choose a Format

Publishing to the web?

Use WebP for photos and complex images - It gives 25–35% smaller files than JPG at the same quality. Use AVIF for even better compression on modern Chrome and Firefox. Fall back to JPG for maximum compatibility.

Logos & UI elements?

Use PNG for pixel graphics that need transparency. Use SVG for icons and logos that scale to any size without quality loss. Never use JPG for images with sharp edges or flat colour - It creates visible artefacts.

Sharing with non-technical users?

Convert to JPG. It opens in every photo viewer, email client, and browser without plugins. If you received an iPhone HEIC photo you can't open, use HEIC to JPG to convert it instantly.

Print or archiving?

Use TIFF for lossless print-ready files, or PDF to package images for professional delivery. Avoid JPG at quality below 85% for anything that will be printed - Compression artefacts show up clearly in print.

Sending by email or message?

Use Compress JPG to reduce file size to under 200 KB for fast loading in inboxes. A quality of 75–80% is typically indistinguishable from the original at screen resolution.

Camera RAW files?

Convert your camera's RAW files (ARW, CR2, NEF, RAF, DNG) to JPG using our RAW converter tools. RAW files are only needed during editing - JPG is the right format for sharing and delivery.
