XCF is GIMP's native project format, equivalent to PSD for Photoshop. It stores layers, channels, guides, and GIMP-specific features in an open format. XCF files are not viewable without GIMP or a compatible application. Converting XCF to JPG flattens all layers into a single composite image and produces a universally compatible JPEG.

This is the standard export step when finishing image editing in GIMP: complete your work in XCF format to preserve editability, then export to JPG for web publishing, printing, or sharing.

XCF (eXperimental Computing Facility) is the native format of GIMP, named after the Berkeley lab where Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis started the project in 1995. XCF stores GIMP-specific features that no other format captures cleanly: layer groups, parasite metadata, path nodes, channel selections, text layers with embedded fonts and per-layer blend modes. The format is internally compressed with RLE per tile and is fully open-source. XCF is the canonical working format for open-source design pipelines and Linux-based agencies, and many Inkscape and Krita users keep XCF masters too for cross-tool round trips.

XCF is GIMP's native project format, storing layers, channels, paths, and guides in a format only GIMP can fully read. Converting XCF to JPG flattens the entire composition and exports the result as a universally viewable image, letting you share GIMP artwork with anyone regardless of whether they have GIMP installed - Which is rarely the case for clients or non-technical collaborators.

Open-source designers, educators, and hobbyists who use GIMP as their primary image editor use XCF for editable source files and convert to JPG for all delivery use cases: website uploads, email attachments, print submissions, and social media posts. The JPG is the "published" version; the XCF is the working file kept for future edits.

Linux distributions include GIMP by default, and many system administrators and developers use it for quick image work. Converting XCF to JPG via jpg.now is useful when the XCF file needs to be shared outside a Linux environment or when the recipient's system does not have a GIMP-compatible viewer installed.

  • Keep the original XCF file as your working copy - The JPG cannot be converted back to a layered XCF.
  • Flatten all layers in GIMP (Image → Flatten Image) before exporting if you want to verify the composite appearance before conversion.
