The video is garbage. Maybe the lens fogged up. Maybe the camera bumped mid-take. Maybe you hit record in the wrong mode and the footage came out too bright to save. But the audio, that on-site voiceover you nailed in one clean take, or the ambient rain you captured before the wind kicked in, is sitting right there inside the .mp4 file, perfectly intact.

The frustrating part is that the file looks like one thing. You see it in your file manager as a single .mp4. Under the surface, though, that container holds two completely separate pieces of data: the video stream and the audio stream. They travel together, but they are not the same data. Pry the container open and you can pull out just the audio with no re-recording and no quality loss from the original capture.

An MP4 file is not a single fused block of audio and video data baked into one. It is a container.
